Where It All Began: The Diathesis Stress Model The first major shift came in the 1960s when psychologists Paul Meehl, Zubin, and Rosenthal introduced the diathesis stress model. Their idea challenged the dominant thinking of the time. They proposed that every person carries a unique predisposition shaped by genetics, brain chemistry, temperament, and early development, and that this predisposition interacts with the pressures of life. In the 1960s and 1970s, this idea faced resistance. Many researchers insisted mental health was either entirely biological or entirely environmental. But as the years passed, research kept pointing to the same conclusion. People with similar experiences often reacted in completely different ways, and the difference came from within. By the 1980s, the model had become a cornerstone of modern psychology. This concept of predisposition and pressure became the first building block of the Cerevex Labs philosophy.
